More than nine million combatants and seven million civilians lost their lives (1% of the world's population), an extraordinary figure, given the technological and industrial sophistication of the belligerents.

These developments resulted in much higher casualty rates that in the past because these new weapons were more destructive and allowed for larger scale military actions to take place. Also arguably these types of weapons and other military advancements at this time led to increases in the size of armies.
