Zebra mussels were first discovered in North America in the Great Lakes in 1988. This invasive species eats phytoplankton and ot

her microscopic organisms in fresh water. What would be the most likely effect if zebra mussels are introduced into a local fresh water lake? (2 points)
a.)The ecosystem would benefit from the increased competition for food and increased diversity.

b.)The ecosystem would be harmed as other phytoplankton-eating organisms would have less to eat.

c.)The zebra mussels would only affect the lake if it already contained another species of mussels.

d.)The zebra mussels would benefit the lake especially species higher up on the food chain.

Answer:

b.)The ecosystem would be harmed as other phytoplankton-eating organisms would have less to eat.

Explanation:

Introduction of zebra mussels will definitely harm the ecosystem because they are invasive. They impose a lot of threat to the native inhabiting species of the water bodies. They attach themselves to the native species and use them as anchors for their survival. By doing this, they make it very difficult for the native species to move, feed and breed. Not only this but also they compete with the native species who eat phytoplanktons as food because of which availability of food for the native species becomes limited.

What food chain is represented in the above food web?
fenix001 [56]
B- tree > insect > frog> snake> hawk

The food chains are represented by organisms interconnected by red arrows that point in the direction of the one that's eating. So, the relation that is explicit by the arrow is that the organism from where the arrow departs is eaten by the organism where the arrow is pointing towards to. So, the food chain that can be observed accurately in the food web is: the tree is eaten by the insect, the insect is eaten by the frog, the frog is eaten by the snake, and the snake is eaten by the hawk.

What regulates the cell cycle of a specific type of cell?
Juli2301 [7.4K]

Both internal and external factors are capable of regulating the cell cycle of a specific type of cell (Option a).

What is the cell cycle?

The cell cycle refers to the period of life of a cell from which it is generated until its division (cytokinesis).

The cell cycle of a cell is regulated by internal factors such as cyclins and kinases that phosphorylate specific proteins as well as external factors that trigger the cell division (e.g. temperature conditions).

In conclusion, both internal and external factors are capable of regulating the cell cycle of a specific type of cell (Option a).
