How does the infinitive function in the following sentence: This summer, Joel's plan is to travel.

The infinitive is functioning as the predicate nominative. "Plan" is the subject (with Joel's as a modifier for "plan"). Since "is" is a linking verb, it is a predicate nominative and not a direct object.

The correct answer is B. As a predicate nominative

Explanation:

A predicate nominative also called a subject complement is a type of sentence complement that is introduced after a linking verb (such as verb to be, seem, look and feel, which are verbs that do not have an object), complementing the subject of the sentence mainly as it renames the subject. Thus, considering in the sentence "This summer, Joel's plan is to travel" the main verb is a linking verb (Verb to be) there is not an object, but a predicate nominative or subject complement which is the infinitive (basic form of a verb) "to travel", also, as it is stated about a predicate s nominative it renames the subject which means "to travel" is the same than "Joel's plan". Thus, in this sentence, the infinitive "to travel" is a predicate nominative as it is connected with a linking verb and renames the subject which is "Joel's plan".

Which sentence is written in the active voice?
hram777 [196]

Answer:

C. Rick and Kate built the house with their own hands.

Explanation:

An active voice is opposite from the passive voice. In this example, the subjects are Rick and Kate and they are doing the action. The verb is to built and refers to active because the subjects are performing an action on object. The object in this example is house. This example is in active  voice because there are all elements needed for the acting and can be transformed into passive voice.

What makes this excerpt from Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens an example of direct characterization? The elderly female was a wom
insens350 [35]

Direct characterization is when the author specifically tells the reader the traits of a character. In this excerpt, Dickens tells you that the woman is elderly, wise, experienced and knows what is "good for children". If Dickens had used indirect characterization, he would have need to shown her wisdom and experience by including specific examples. The reader would then be lead to develop his own conclusion about the whether or not the woman was wise and experienced.
