• Impacts of meteors are rare events, but they can also modify the climate on earth. Impacts of major proportions can profoundly modify the biosphere. With the impact, debris can be thrown into space and into the orbit of the Earth, where they would remain for some time and only then would fall. There would be fires on a global scale and the release of large quantities of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere causing the greenhouse effect. With heat, the nitrogen and oxygen molecules would break down and combine with hydrogen to form nitric acid (HNO3). There would then be long periods of acid rain, further damaging terrestrial life. Parallel and consecutively, the increase in acidity and temperature of the oceans would seriously affect marine ecosystems.
• The particles emitted by the volcanoes (aerosols) reflect sunlight, preventing part of it from reaching the surface. Thus, in the years following major volcanic eruptions, there is a cooling of the Earth's climate system.
• The orbital variation or Milankovitch cycle occurs periodically, causing solar radiation to arrive differently in each hemisphere from time to time. This variation causes glacial variations, which are periods of long summers and long winters.
