Read the passage from Animal Farm. But if there were hardships to be borne, they were partly offset by the fact that life nowada

ys had a greater dignity than it had had before. There were more songs, more speeches, more processions. Napoleon had commanded that once a week there should be held something called a Spontaneous Demonstration, the object of which was to celebrate the struggles and triumphs of Animal Farm. At the appointed time the animals would leave their work and march round the precincts of the farm in military formation, with the pigs leading, then the horses, then the cows, then the sheep, and then the poultry. The dogs flanked the procession and at the head of all marched Napoleon's black cockerel. Boxer and Clover always carried between them a green banner marked with the hoof and the horn and the caption, "Long live Comrade Napoleon!" Afterwards there were recitations of poems composed in Napoleon's honour, and a speech by Squealer giving particulars of the latest increases in the production of foodstuffs, and on occasion a shot was fired from the gun. The sheep were the greatest devotees of the Spontaneous Demonstration, and if anyone complained (as a few animals sometimes did, when no pigs or dogs were near) that they wasted time and meant a lot of standing about in the cold, the sheep were sure to silence him with a tremendous bleating of "Four legs good, two legs bad!" But by and large the animals enjoyed these celebrations. They found it comforting to be reminded that, after all, they were truly their own masters and that the work they did was for their own benefit. So that, what with the songs, the processions, Squealer's lists of figures, the thunder of the gun, the crowing of the cockerel, and the fluttering of the flag, they were able to forget that their bellies were empty, at least part of the time. How does the use of repetition support the theme in this passage? Things that are repeated often are eventually accepted as truth. Dictatorships can use repeated rituals as a distraction from oppression. Loyalty can be instilled by regularly reminding people why their leader is great. Repeating facts over and over can help bring comfort to those with short memories.

The book “<u><em>Animal Farm</em></u>” was written by <u>George Orwell </u>, and it is the animal fable that is a mockery of the communism system. The repetition of ideas is a means of the oppressors to keep the working class quiet and unwilling to question authority.

Question: How does the use of repetition support the theme in this passage?

Answer: B.Dictatorships can use repeated rituals as a distraction from oppression.

You have been assigned to write an essay on the history of the doughnut.
Tanya [424]

Answer:

For background reading, the most helpful option would be to research Option A: reading the various theories for why doughnuts are called "doughnuts."

Explanation:

The history of the doughnut is contested because many cultures have a food that involves a practice of frying some version of sweetened dough as a dessert or a snack. For example, in Spain (and many Latin American countries) there is the churro, and the tradition of making sufganiyot goes back centuries in the Mizrahi Jewish culture. With the focus on doughnuts from the start you would gain some valuable background information to start researching your paper.  Many doughnut aficionados believe the American doughnut was adapted from Dutch immigrants in New York who made their traditional oliebollen.

Select the aphorism that best expresses the following sentiment: Be careful to whom you tell your secrets because they can betra
Alex787 [66]

Answer:

To whom thy secret thou dost tell, to him thy freedom thou dost sell.

Explanation:

An aphorism is a saying, proverb, or maxim that expresses a general truth or life principle. They are also taken, at times, as mottos or ideals of life.

The given aphorism <em>"Be careful to whom you tell your secrets because they can betray you" </em>can be best expressed by the saying <em>"to whom thy secret thou dost tell, to him thy freedom thou dost sell"</em>. This sentence expresses the same sentiment of being careful about telling one's secrets to anyone, for it is the same as giving them the keys to one's happiness or sadness, one's freedom. <em><u>They can either keep the secret and give you freedom or reveal the secrets and ruin you</u></em>.

Thus, the correct answer is the last/ fourth option.
