After coming under attack from the elusive Nemo himself, Arronax and two others are "rescued" by the aforementioned pessimist and taken on a voyage of epic proportions. The attitude portrayed by the professor is one of awe with regards to the underseas adventure, while also contemplating his escape. He character is torn between his sense of freedom and his love of marine biology. This contrast in character depths completely brings about the makings of the entire novel.
