With richer soil, Southern farms produced more and needed more workers.

As opposed to the North's industrialized economy, the  South had an agricultural one due to its rich soil. The  warm and moist climate in the South alongside the minerals left from the tidewater in the tidelands, resulted in a rich  soil.
