'For a time, Alcott was a contributor to the outstanding Transcendentalist periodical, the Dial. In 1840 and 1841 his visionary “Orphic Sayings” appeared in the Dial. Despite Alcott’s painstaking efforts at clarity, these 100 epigrams aroused the ridicule not only of the general public but of some members of the Transcendental community as well.
