A small group of radicals, led by John Adams, felt that war with Great Britain was inevitable. However, in an effort to avoid war, they passed a resolution known as the Olive Branch Petition.



This petition was sent to King George III, and addressed the wrongs that had been perpetrated against the colonies. They asked King George III to correct these wrongs, and to repair unfair trading practices which favored Great Britain. They reaffirmed that they did not desire to go to war, and that they were not seeking to become independent.King George III refused to even read the petition, and declared that the colonies had come out in open rebellion against the Crown and against Great Britain.</span>
