After defeating the Spanish in the Wars for territories such as Cuba, Guam, The Philippines and Cuba, Americans, instead of letting those territories decide their political faith, decided they would exercise control over them, managing their economic activities. This was seen by many "Anti Imperialists" as something that did not represent the Constitution of the United States.
