Veena writes an essay about Native Americans in the 1800s: Native Americans and U.S. settlers struggled for land during the earl

y 1800s. U.S. citizens slowly pushed Native Americans off their traditional lands. They fought wars, such as the Seminole War, for control of Louisiana. Native Americans lost these struggles and were pushed farther and farther west. Which statement corrects a mistake in Veena's essay? Native Americans usually gave up their lands voluntarily. The Seminole War was fought over control of Florida. Most Native Americans moved south, rather than west. U.S. citizens had little interest in Native American lands.

The correct answer is “The Seminole War was fought over control of Florida.”

The Seminole wars also were known as the Florida Wars were a series of three conflicts between Seminole - native American tribe - and the US army.

The First Seminole War started because some American Settlers were migrating south into the Seminole territory. With the war, the US military pushed the Seminoles farther south into Florida.

The Second Seminole War started because of the Treaty of Payne’s Landing that required Indians to give up their Florida lands in three years and move west. The US Army arrived in 1835 to enforce the treaty and it started the war.

The Third Seminole War started when conflicts over land arose between whites and some Seminoles that remained in Florida. The Seminole population was reduced to 200 when the war was over.

Explain Senator Stephen Douglas’ attempts at securing a bid for the Presidency
leva [86]

Stephen Douglass was a Democrat elected to the U.S. Senate in 1858. Douglas defeated Abraham Lincoln to obtain his Senate seat. He was a supporter of the idea of popular sovereignty, the belief that the settlers in newly admitted territories should determine whether the area would be slave or free. Douglass received the Democratic nomination for president in 1860. Douglass support of popular sovereignty led to the splintering of the Democratic Party into Northern and Southern factions. Northerners opposed secession while Southerners supported it. The splintering of the party led to their defeat and the election of the Republican Abraham Lincoln in 1860.
