When asked to "walk in the other person's shoes" this means that you should try to imagine yourself in his situation. This is called empathy. This is different from sympathy since sympathy just allows you to feel sorry for the other person. On the other hand, empathy is feeling the person's emotions as if you are the one going through his problems.
