The First Amendment states that the government cannot make laws concerned with the establishment of religion. Nor can it make laws that prevent people from practicing their beliefs. Both documents state that citizens shall have freedom of religion and that they cannot be punished for their beliefs. Both documents call for the separation of church and state.
