During the Great Depression, the people were unable to buy the large quantities of wheat that farmers were producing due to new technologies. Therefore, farmers were unable to make a profit. In an effort to earn back some money, they over-cultivated the land. In the process, the farmers removed the natural drought-resistant grasses that covered the prairies. As a period of drought and strong winds followed, the fertile topsoil of the ground was removed, as the protective grasses had disappeared. Dust storms increased and the soil was left bare, exacerbating the economic problems of the time.
