The Tennessee Valley Authority<span> (</span>TVA<span>) is a federally owned </span>corporation<span> in the </span>United States<span> created by congressional charter on May 18, 1933, to provide </span>navigation<span>, </span>flood control<span>, </span>electricity generation<span>, </span>fertilizer<span> manufacturing, and </span>economic development<span>to the </span>Tennessee Valley<span>, a region particularly affected by the </span>Great Depression<span>. The enterprise was a result of the efforts of Senator </span>George W. Norris<span> of Nebraska. TVA was envisioned not only as a provider, but also as a regional economic development agency that would use federal experts and electricity to more quickly modernize the region's economy and society.</span>
Pontiac's Rebellion began in 1763. Many Native American tribes had been very friendly with the French. The Native Americans were concerned when Great Britain got control over the land that France had previously controlled. When France lost the French and Indian War, they gave this land to Great Britain.
Prohibition, the attempt to halt the sale and consumption of alcohol in the 1920's, was unsuccessful. Americans continued to buy and drink alcohol supplied through a wide network of organized crime.
Members of the party are called "Democrats" or "Dems". The term "Democrat Party" has also been in local use, but has usually been used by opponents since 1952 as a disparaging term.
