until he confessed to committing the crime.

The case would become a criminal case, as the man would have been arrested under jurisdiction of criminal courts, and would be appealed to a jury form the district they live in and the crime was committed in. This also give jurisdiction to the original court the case was appealed in, unless the defendant appeals to a higher court.
