The main advantage would be trade. The richest cities and countries were those that had cities with harbors. This is because a huge amount of wealth could be generated from trade and from the influx of new ideas that the merchants bring with them from other countries. Cities like Venice that were mainly doing trade were the reason Renaissance began when it did.
