Which short narrative would be the most appropriate style and tone for the personal essay section of a college application?

English

#1 is too vague and casual. #2 uses slang that wouldn't be used in a college application. #3 uses dated wording.

This leaves us with #4, which offers a personal reason for volunteering ("my grandfather had a heart attack") and is overall written formally. Thus, this would be the most appropriate style and tone for such an essay.

An account of a fearful experience you once had
ioda
My account of a fearful experience I once had was that I was scared, worried, and I was beginning to get a little paranoid. In this experience I had, me and my siblings went to the park. We had a good time, we were playing around, and then it was time to go home. We were walking home and when we nearly were there, a car suddenly sped up and started to drive behind us. I initially got the impression that it was going to become a human trafficking situation because everywhere we went, the car also went, but drove very slowly behind us. We ran home, and we made it safely. However, we all were scared at the time of the incident because we could not believe that at our location we would have to watch our backs. The environment was scary, fearful, and it all felt out of place.

ale4655 [162]
When we say complete subject, this is what is being talked about in the sentence including its modifiers, and the complete predicate includes the main verb and its modifiers as well. In the given sentence above, the complete subject would be "He" and the complete predicate would be "<span>had no help with the project." Hope this helps.</span>
