The delegates attend the national conventions are selected at the state level as per under the rules defined by each political party state committees.

Further Explanation:

The rules and the formulas made for the selection of the party candidate change from state to state and are changed annually. There are two methods adopted by the state to choose the delegates for national conventions. Caucus and Primary are the two methods. In the primary method, the states which are holding presidential primary elections have authority to open it for all registered voters. Here voting is done through a secret ballot. The voters choose among the candidates and then their votes are counted.

Closed and open are the two types of primaries. In closed primary voters can vote only in those elections in which they are registered. In open primary voters can vote in either party but can vote only in one primary. The caucus are the meetings which are open to all the voters registered in the party.

In this method, voters are divided among the groups in order of their support to the candidate. The voters of each group are then invited to give speeches in support of the candidate.

In the end, party organisers count the votes of each group and determine the number of county conventions each delegate won. In the caucus process pledged and unpledged convention delegates are produced depending upon party rules of the different states.
