Seeds develop within pinecones, which are organs of coniferous trees. Pinecones open only when environmental conditions are right and seeds are mature. Warm, dry conditions allow seeds to spread long distances on the wind and help in germination. In contrast, cold, damp weather can make seeds wet and unable to spread far from a tree.
