In 1845, the annexation of Texas and in 1846, through a treaty with Great Britain, the U.S acquired the Oregon Territory. In 1848, several western territories were annexed to the U.S after their cession from Mexico and finally, in 1853, the Gadsden Purchase in northern Mexico.
