Solve the equation 4x^2-12x=7 algebraically for x.
ss7ja [257]
                            4x² - 12x = 7
                                      - 7  - 7
                       4x² - 12x - 7 = 0
                4x² + 2x - 14x - 7 = 0
2x(2x) + 2x(1) - 7(2x) - 7(1) = 0
          2x(2x + 1) - 7(2x + 1) = 0
                    (2x - 7)(2x + 1) = 0
       2x - 7 = 0    or    2x + 1 = 0
           + 7 + 7                 - 1  - 1
             2x = 7                 2x = -1
              2     2                  2      2
               x = 3¹/₂      or       x = ⁻¹/₂

How do you know if a square root of something is rational or irrational? like i know it can be represented by a fraction or a ra
ra1l [238]
The square root of a whole number will be rational if the whole number is a perfect square (i.e 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, 121, 144 etc) and irrational otherwise.

Rational number is a number that can be described as m/n

so a fraction can be a rational number, 0.8=4/5
Irrational numbers can't be written as a fraction

The part about the number having to be a perfect square is still correct, if it's not a prefect square than it will just keep going(a decimal that never ends)

for example the square root of 0.64 is 0.8
and the square root of 10 is 3.162277...
as you can see the 0.64 one ends and is rational, whereas the 10 one just keeps going and is irrational.

Choose the correct expressions using the fewest number of bases possible that are equivalent to the current expression. Select A
rjkz [21]

2 Answers: Choice B, Choice C

The rule we use here is \frac{a^b}{a^c} = a^{b-c}

If the font size is too small, then it says (a^b)/(a^c) = a^(b-c)

We subtract the exponents when dividing exponentials like this. The bases must be the same.

So this means the exponents 13 and 3 subtract to get 13-3 = 10

We either have an exponent of "13-3" or an exponent of "10" as an equivalent expression. The base stays at 2 the entire time.
