Which equation is an identity?

Mathematics

The condition for an expression to be an <u>identity </u>is that both sides of equality must give the same value.

In this case, the equation that fulfills that condition is the first equation (1).

<u>Let’s prove it:</u>

1) 3w+8-w=4w-2(w-4)

Applying distributive property:

3w+8-w=4w-2w+8

Joining together similar terms on both sides of the equality:

2w+2w-4w=8-8

<h2>0=0    >>>>>>>This is true and fulfills the condition of identity</h2>

The other equations do not fulfill the condition:

2) 5y+5=5y-6

5y-5y=-6-5

0 =-11   >>>>>>>This is not logic

3) 6m-6=7m+9-m

6m-7m+m=9+6

0=15  >>>>>>>This is not logic

4) 8-(6v+7)=-6v-1

8-6v-7=-6v-1

1=-1   >>>>>>>This is not logic

1/2(4y+7)

Use the distributive property. a(b+c)= ab+ac

1/2*4y= 2y

1/2*7= 3.5

2y+3.5 <---- simplified expression

There is 3/4 of pizza leftover from the night before. How many 1/8 portiona are there?
lara [203]

Answer: 6

Step-by-step explanation: First you need to set both denominators equal. To do that you multiply 4 by 2 to get 8. Then you have to multiply the numerator by 2, so 2 times 3 equals 6.

I am a 3-digit number. If you switch my first and last digits, I decrease by 297. Also, my
malfutka [58]

Answer:

  • 865

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the 3-digit number is <u>abc</u> = 100a + 10b + c.

<u>We have:</u>

  • 100a + 10b + c - 100c - 10b - a = 297
  • b = a - 6
  • a = 2c - 2

<u>Simplify the first equation:</u>

  • 99a - 99c = 297
  • a - c = 3
  • a = c + 3

<u>Solve for c by substitution:</u>

  • 2c - 2 = c + 3
  • 2c - c = 3 + 2
  • c = 5

<u>Find a:</u>

  • a = 3 + 5 = 8

<u>Find b:</u>

  • b = 8 - 2 = 6

<u>The number is:</u>

  • 865

3x^2 + 4x = -8<br> solve using quadratic formula
Firdavs [7]

Use the quadratic equation to solve this (image of the quadratic equation is below)

Remember that quadratic functions are set up like so:

ax^{2} +bx +c = 0

To make the equation 3x² + 4x = -8 into a quadratic function you must bring -8 to the left side of the equation so it equals zero. To do this add 8 to both sides

3x² + 4x + 8= -8 + 8

3x² + 4x + 8 = 0

That means that in this equation...

a = 3

b = 4

c = 8

^^^Plug these numbers into the quadratic equation and solve  (Keep in mind that +/- is ± )

\frac{-4+/-\sqrt{(4)^{2}-4(3)(8)}}{2(3)}

\frac{-4+/-\sqrt{16-96}}{6}

\frac{-4+/-\sqrt{-80}}{6}

^^^There is no real solution to this equation. You must have an imaginary solution

\frac{-4+/-i\sqrt{80}}{6}

Simplify

\frac{-2+/-2i \sqrt{5}}{3}

Hope this helped!
