You must be aware of your goals and needs. People are used to saying the phrase "Eyes on the prize" and this is really important to have in mind when it comes to education and career.

When people don't focus on their goals and needs they tend to get lost in the way, studying things they don't like, or that are not going to take them anywhere.

Focused people keep on following a logical path in order to get wherever they want.
