The Homestead Act was a legislative provision of the United States according to which 160 acres (65 hectares) of state land were assigned to those who requested it in the wilds outside the borders of the thirteen original colonies. Those who had never fought against the US government and, among them, freed slaves, could apply for assignment to a local local office.

They were motivated by manifest destiny. An ideology that stated that its settlers were destined to settle across North America.
