multiply the FIRST terms in each binomial ... y²
multiply the OUTER terms ("y" and "-6) ... y² - 6y
multiply the INNER terms ("-8" and "y") ... y² - 6y - 8y
multiply the LAST terms in each binomial ... y² - 6y - 8y + 48
add like terms ... y² - 14y + 48
