The infant mortality rate is a social indicator represented by the number of children who died before reaching one year of life per thousand live births within a year. It is an important indicator of the quality of health, sanitation and education services in a city, country or region.
In other words, we can state that the infant mortality rate represents the number of deaths among infants 0 to 1 year over a specified period divided by the number of live births over the same period.
