In areas where Europeans were technologically superior, they dominated the population trough the use of weapons the strength, controlling the main points of their new colony. In some cases, they established a local government subordinated to the dominant country. On the other hand, in locations where they couldn't use the strength to dominate, they create an influence sphere, that could be economical, political or social. However, to the fact these locations were equal (or in some cases, almost equal) to the Europeans powers, this influence sphere was not strong enough.
