The poetry of colonial Americal shows that people needed a stable government and economy before they could make great advances in cultural pursuits such as literature, music, and painting.In this period, an impressive body of literature, mostly nonfiction prose, such as autobiography and sermon were produced.

The first literature in America was made by European settlers around the 1600s. They wrote about their experiences in a practical way, a nonfiction approach inherited from Britain literature.

The earliest work in literature was John Smith's, who wrote about his explorations as a President of Jamestown Colony. He also wrote about some needs to settle and be a greater government to the colony.'

Other topic that was written about is religion by Nathaniel Ward and John Winthrop. Religion was a serious concern to colonist, that's why they wrote about it.

<em>So, at the end, topics that colonist wrote about the period was government, resources and religion.</em>
