The Anti-Federalists were a political group that existed during the late 1700's and early 1800's. When the US was creating a new constitution, one thing that the Anti-Federalists fought against was a strong central government. The Anti-Federalists feared that too strong of a central government would result in the violation of individual inalienable rights. These fears were a result of the mistreatment of American colonists when they were under the control of Great Britain. This is why the Anti-Federalists believed in strong state governments, as these institutions knew more about their citizens than the federal govenrment.
