Families were mostly separated because they were going to be sold. This happened in two major ways, father sold away from family or parents sold individually to sell children. The states the slaves were most afraid of being sold were Texas, Lousiana, and Missisipi.

Therefore, Slavists treated them like an item. Considering them individuals. Now, they represented more money if they married in the plantations and had children. That way the investment grew, so they were allowed to carry "broad marriages". Now, Texas, Lousiana, and Mississippi were states that had one of the most aggressive cultures towards them. Therefore, they feared to go to those states. Slavists were very cruel in Lousiana especially.
