The terrible effects of World War II were not just seen in human lives lost, or the horrendous use of a nuclear weapon for the first time in history. Its consequences also had huge repercussions on the means by which European powers, such as Britain, France, and others, controlled their overseas colonies, especially in Africa and Asia. Due to the terrible effect that the war had on military power, and economic power, most of these European countries were forced to start the process of dissolving their colonies because they simply did not have the means to keep them. Instead of multiple colonies, what did happen was that two new superpowers rose after the war: the United States and the Soviet Union.
