Prior to becoming president, he was the 20th Vice President, and he chose not to have a Vice President during his term. He became president after James A Garfield died. Prior to 1854, he was part of the Whig Party. However, from 1854 until his death in 1886, he was a republican.
He was born on the 5th October 1829 and died on 18th November 1886- at the age of 57.

Sir John Grahame Douglas Clark was a famous British Archaeologist who was involved in excavations of Mesolithic settlements.

These settlements were discovered approx. 0.8 km South of Scarborough in an area now known as Star Carr.

The site was responsible for the discovery of numerators Mesolithic tools and artifacts which provided a detailed picture on the life of people in the stone age.
