Answer:

The answer to your question is x = 1.85; y° = 67.6°

Step-by-step explanation:

Law of cosines

           c² = a² + b² - 2abcos C

Process

1.- Find x

             x² = 5² + 4² - 2(5)(4)cos 20

- Simplification

             x² = 25 + 16 - 40(0.939)

             x² = 41 - 37.56

             x² = 3.44

             x = 1.85

2.- Find y°

Solve law of cosines for cos y°

             cos y = (5² - 4² - 1.85²) / -2(4)(1.85)

-Simplification

             cos y = (25 - 16 - 3.42) / -14.8

             cos y = 5.58 / -14.8

             cosy = -0.377

                  y = 112.1 °

- Solve using law of sines

               sin 20 / 1.85 = sin y / 5

               sin y = 5sin 20 / 1.85

               siny = 0.9243

                    y = 67.6°

Both angles (112.1 and 67.6°) are supplementary. But I think the right answer is 67.6°

What is the best approximation of the length of segment QS? (Note: cos 80° = 0.17)
matrenka [14]

Answer: QS=11.8cm

Step-by-step explanation:

1. You have the following information:

- The lenght of RS is 2 centimeters.

- The angle m∠S=80°.

- Cos80°=0.17

2. Therefore, you can calculate the lenght of the segment QS as following:

cos80=\frac{adjacent}{hypotenuse}

adjacent=2cm\\hypotenuse=QS\\cos80=0.17

3. Substitute values and solve for QS:

0.17=\frac{2cm}{QS}\\QS=\frac{2cm}{0.17} \\QS=11.76cm

4. To the nearest tenth:

QS=11.8cm

Passing through(-1,8) and parallel to the line whose equation is 8x-9y-2=0
notka56 [123]
<h3>Answer:</h3>

y = 8/9x + 80/9

<h3>Step-by-step explanation:</h3>

<u>We are given;</u>

  • Equation of a line as 8x -9y -2 = 0
  • Coordinates (-1,8)

We are required to determine the equation of a line parallel to the given line and passing through a point (-1,8)

<h3>Step 1: Determine the Gradient of the given line </h3>
  • When an equation is written in the form y = mx + c, m is the gradient.
  • Therefore; we could write the equation 8x -9y -2 = 0 in the form of  y= mx + c

9y = 8x -2

y = 8/9x - 2/9

Therefore, the slope, m = 8/9

<h3>Step 2: Determine the equation of the line</h3>
  • We need to know that parallel lines have the same gradient
  • Therefore, the slope of the line in question is 8/9
  • It passes through a point (-1, 8)

We can therefore, determine the equation;

Taking another point, (x,y)

\frac{y-8}{x+1} = \frac{8}{9}

9(y-8) = 8(x+1)

9y - 72 = 8x + 8

 9y = 8x + 8 +72

 9y = 8x + 80

  y = 8/9x + 80/9

Therefore, the equation of the line is y = 8/9x + 80/9
