Thomas Jefferson was the minister to France on behalf of the united states and during his stay in Paris he wrote the deceleration of independence. 

After returning to the newly founded united states Jefferson was asked to be our fist secretary of state, alongside George Washington as president.

Jefferson eventually resigned from his job as secretary of state in order to run for president, he did not win the first time he won though because he came in second he became the vice president under John Addams.

Jefferson ran for president a second time and won, his vice president was Arron Burr.

During his time as president Jefferson signed the Louisiana purchase and initiated the Louis and Clark expedition.
