When Gatsby invited Tom and the Sloans to stay for dinner, Mrs Sloans refused immediately and instead offers Gatsby an invitation to dine ate her home.

Explanation:

In "The Great Gatsby", Nick unexpectedly saw Tom at Gatsby's mansion and was accompanied by Mr and Mrs Sloans. The Sloans examplifies everything about the old rich and very repellant. Gatsby then invited the Sloans and Tom to dinner but she hastily refused and then unwillingly invited Gatsby and Nick to dinner.

This is because Rainsford who is a hunter just as Zaroff is has to use his intelligence and creativity to win a hunt in which Zaroff is hunting and trying to kill Rainsford. In the end, Rainsford wins due to his wits and ultimately defeats the human hunter.
