Several years ago, Matt built a rectangular flower bed at his house. The width of the flower bed was 14 inches less than the len

gth of the flower bed. This spring, Matt decides to build a new rectangular flower bed at his house that covers the same area as the old flower bed. After some planning, he decides that the length of the new flower bed should be 8 inches less than the width of the old flower bed, and that the width of the new flower bed should 8 inches greater than two times the length of the old flower bed.
What is the approximate length of the old flower bed?
A. 28.23 inches
B. 16.37 inches
C. 6.23 inches
D. 24.47 inches

Answer:

A. 28.23 inches

Step-by-step explanation:

Since the are of the old and new flower bed are the same,

                A_{old} = A_{new}

 l(l- 14) = (l- 22)(2l+ 8)

l^{2}- 14l = 2l^{2} +8l -44l -176

l^{2}- 14l = 2l^{2} -36l -176

combining the terms to form a quadratic equation;

l^{2} - 2l^{2} -14l +36l +176 = 0

-l^{2} +22l + 176 = 0

multiply through by minus sign;

l^{2} -22l - 176 = 0

Applying the quadratic formula,

    \frac{-b }{2} ± \sqrt{b^{2} - 4ac }

a = 1, b= -22 and c = -176

substitute these values in the equation,

=  \frac{22}{2} ±\sqrt{484 + 704}

= 28.233688

= 28.23 inches

Prove the identity (cosx+cosy)^2+(sinx-siny)^2= 2+2cos(x+y)
astra-53 [7]
(cos(x) + cos(y))^2 + (sin(x) - sin(y))^2 Remove the brackets

cos^2(x)
+ cos^2(y) + 2cos(x)*cos(y) + sin^2(x) - 2(sin(x)*sin(y) + sin^2(y) Combine these two in bold to make 1 because sin^2(x) + cos^2(x) = 1

1 + cos^2(y) + 2cos(x)*cos(y) - 2*sin(x)*cos(y) + sin^2(y)
These two in bold also make 1

2 + 2cos(x)*cos(y) - 2*sin(X)*sin(y) Bring out a common factor of 2
2 +2(cos(x)*cos(y) -  sin(x)*sin(y) )

but cos(x+y ) = cos(x)*cos(y) - sin(x)*sin(y)

2 + 2* cos(x + y) is your final answer.

John needs 7 gallon bottles of water to fill 90water balloons how many gallon bottles of water does John need to purchase to fil
Allushta [10]

Answer:

11 bottles

Step-by-step explanation:

make a proportion because if you're using the same rate proportions can show that it's equal

\frac{7}{90} = \frac{x}{140}

cross multiply

7 *140= 980

divide the answer by 90 to find x

980/90= 10.8

round to 11 because you can't have 10.8 bottles

Solve the system of equations 2r + 2s = 50 and 2r – s = 17.
WARRIOR [948]
Eq1) 2r+2s=50
eq2) 2r-s=17

solve for s in equation2 (eq2)

-s=17-2r
s=-17+2r
Substitute s into equation1 (eq1)
2r+2(-17+2r)=50
2r-34+4r=50
6r-34=50
6r=50+34
6r=84
r=14
Substitute into either equation and solve for s
2(14)-s=17
28-s=17
-s=17-28
-s=-11
s=11
