multiply 1/3 by 4/4 to make it similar to 5/12 that way you can add them. because the denominator is different from each other you can’t add them. once you do that you get 4/12, you then add 5/12 and that equals 9/12. in order to get to 12/12 you need 3/12 more. this 3/12 represents the 69 guest that chose vegetarian. the 5/12 represents the the guest who chose chicken and the 4/12 represents the ones who chose beef. now that you know 69 people is the same as 3/12 of all the guest. you then realize that 9 is divisible by 3. so you multiply 69 by 3 because 3 goes into 9 3 times. which gives you 207. 207 represents 9/12. and we already know 69 represents 3/12. so you add them together and get 276. sorry if that was confusing but that’s the best way i can explain it.
