Critical Reading The questions below refer to the selection “The Prologue from The Canterbury Tales.” What can the reader infer
emmainna [20.7K]

<em>The Canterbury tale by Geoffrey Chaucer,</em> what the reader infer about the Friar through the following lines is that he will use people for money. Like the prioress and the monk, Friar too fails to establish any of the expected virtues. He arranged marriages by sounding generous because the young women are his mistresses and moreover pregnant.

Further, he injects money through committing the sin of selling "forgiveness' which is supposed to be freely given. Moreover, he kept no acquaintance with the sick or poor. He was a corrupt person, for the private gains he destroys the base of faith in people which was his duty to serve.

Write three sentences: one that uses conjunctive adverbs, one that uses subordinating adverbs, and one that uses correlatives.
-Dominant- [34]

Answer: 1. Dogs are affectionate pets; on the other hand, cats are not very loving; however, owning a cat does have other advantages.

2. Although we left our house an hour before the time of the show, we did not arrive on time because our car broke down.

3. Neither Sarah nor her brother will go to the party tomorrow night, not because they will attend another party, but because they are out of town.

Explanation: A conjunctive adverb is a type of adverb used to connect an independent clause to another independent clause. <u>In the first sentence</u> ("Dogs are affectionate pets; on the other hand, cats are not very loving; however, owning a cat does have other advantages"),<u> there are two conjunctive adverbs: "on the other hand" and "however"</u>. Both of them show contrast. Furthermore, a subordinating adverb or conjunction is a word used to connect an independent clause to a dependent clause. <u>In "Although we left our house an hour before the time of the show, we did not arrive on time because our car broke down", "although" and "before" are subordinating conjunctions</u>. "Although" indicates concession, while "before" makes reference to a relationship of time. Finally, correlative conjunctions are conjunctions that come in pairs and connect one element to another<u>. In the third sentence</u> ("Neither Sarah nor her brother will go to the party tomorrow night"), <u>"neither... nor" and "not...but" are correlative conjunctions.</u>

Do you believe in luck? Are you superstitious? How so? If not, why do you think some people
bija089 [108]

Coming from a philosophical standpoint luck doesn't exist. When you get "lucky" it isn't an outside force that is rewarding you for helping a grandma crossing the street, it is just a concept we came up with to give reason behind things that seemingly shouldn't happen.

From a spiritual/religious standpoint it is the opposite. Luck could be your god(s) rewarding you for good behavior, or just making you lucky for no reason but to have fun. People tend to believe in luck as some outside force due to religious or spiritual beliefs.
