Five Forks was such an important strategic position for Lee and the Confederate Army because it was a point that made the Confederacy able to control the South Side Railroad.

Once the Confederates lost Five Forks on April, 1865, the cities of Petersburg and Richmond were put in danger, as the Confederates had lost a rapid way to reach those cities to defend them.

I believe that the reason why the Five Forks were such an important strategy position for Lee and his army because it was his rail link with the rest of the Confederacy.
