Of course Germany had to be punished for war crimes and preventative measures had to be put in place so Germany couldn't try that again, but at the same time, if the treaty was less harsh it wouldn't have angered Germans to the point of electing the Nazi party. The German economy was already crashing and the decisions that were made in the treaty only worsened the entire establishment.
