Explanation:

After the Civil War, a period known as Reconstruction followed. The main purpose of Reconstruction was to deal with the aftermath of the war, reunite the country and integrate African Americans into mainstream society. However, different perspectives existed when it came to deciding how to go about it. On the one hand, Congress wanted the South to deal with most of the aftermath, as they believed the South was to blame for the war. On the other hand, the President wanted to avoid antagonizing the South, and instead focused on bringing both regions together.
