Samuel Tilden was the losing candidate in the Presidential election of 1876. Tilden, democratic, lost to Hayes, republican. However, this election caused a controversial post-election process, as Tilden did actually win the popular vote by number and percentage, but Hayden win by electoral vote and states carried.
