The Great Leap Forward was a campaign led by Chairman Mao Zedong. It was a five-year plan aimed at reconstructing the economy of China. Mao Zedong moved forward with the campaign which converted the country from an agricultural-based economy towards being a communist society. Farming privately was strictly prohibited and restrictions were imposed on the people. The campaign of rural industrialization led the farmers to starve.
