Early years in the movement focus on the trading company and appeals to the British for independence. Under Gandhi, the movement began to make an impression on the British through the use of boycotts, protests, and non-violence. With Gandhi's hunger strike, the British could no longer justify their hold on India.
Nationalism can unify a country by having a sense of superiority over other countries.
The only answer I found was: The ancient Chinese kings maintained control of their dynasties throguh military means.

Besides the two answers above me, I managed to find a reasonable answer:
"Rulers became powerful because they controlled land and had strong armies."
This is all I could find, hope this benefits others who wonder what the answer is!
The civil war started on April 8th, 1861. It started due to the difference of opinions on Slavery. This was the major reason why the war started.
