Answer:

1). The Great Depression and World War II brought increasing economic woes to South Africa and convinced the government to strengthen its racial segregation policies. In 1948, the Afrikaner National Party dominated the general election under the slogan 'apartheid' (literally 'apartness').

2). The apartheid was able to eliminate intra-race inequalities, as the whites were all enhanced resources, and the non-whites were all excluded solely because of their races. Thus, though intra-race disparity decreased, the wealth gap between whites and non-whites expanded (Linford, 2011)
