It tells that later in the story, the dad of the narrator is probably going to get hit by a car or maybe a train, but it seems like he's familiar with the headlights, like he wasn't afraid of them because he couldn't read his future, but if he had been able to read his future, he never would have befriended, and later married those headlights, or whatever.
