The detail above tells that Canton had already overcome his fears about his mother safety and do not need the broom dog again.

The broom dog was given to Canton by Mr. Munch to make him feel better after Canton mother was hit by a bus. Whenever Canton was anxious and needed comfort, he would run his fingers through the dogs hair. He named the broom dog dusty.
