How many extraneous solutions does the equation below have?
FrozenT [24]

Answer

0

Explanation

(2m)/(2m+3)-(2m)/(2m-3)=1

Simplifying the left hand first

(2m)/(2m+3)-(2m)/(2m-3) = {2m(2m-3) - 2m(2m+3)}/(4m²-9)

                                        (4m²-6m-4m²-6m)/(4m²-9)

                                         = (-12m) / (4m²-9)

Now this equet to 1

(-12m) / (4m²-9) = 1

-12m = 4m²-9

4m²+ 12m -9 =0 ⇒⇒⇒ This is a quadratic equation that has 2 real solutions.

4m²+ 12m -9 =0

m² + 3m + (3/2)²= 9/4 + 9/4

(m + 3/2)² = 18/4

m = √18/2 - 3/2                or m = -√18/2 - 3/2

    = 0.621 = -3.621

So we can say that the equation has NO extraneous solutions.

Explain why (–4x)0 = 1, but –4x0 = –4.
hodyreva [135]
Any number raised to power of 0 is 1.
In (-4x)^0, because of the parenthesis, the whole number is being raided to 0, which gives 1.
But in -4x^0, only x is being raised to 0, thus -4x^0 = -4(1) = -4.

Explain how the identity property in the problem, 2/3 (1) = 1 (2/3) = 2/3, is the same with any rational number. ANSWER FAST PLE
Morgarella [4.7K]
First of all, the identity property of multiplication (which is what this is I'm assuming) is that the number 1 multiplied by any other number is that number itself. (An example would be 2 multiplied by 1, which would be two) So in this problem, this rule applies too, since 2/3 multiplied by 1 would be 2/3!

Hope this helped :)
