Construction of physical structures to protect coasts from erosive power of waves
They are both on the end of the Pacific rim. They both have an above average number of volcanoes, and they are steeper and more narrow then other mountain ranges. This is a result of their both straddling and colliding continental plates and being on top of very active geological fault lines.
Rip currents are mainly caused when the sea is rough and large waves break into the shore. the water from the previous large wave tries to find a weak spot in the incoming wave and when it finds it, the water quickly pulls away from the shore causing dangerous rip currents. This type of currents have caused numerous deaths.
